Achieve Superior Bonding in to all Recycled Artificial Grass Backings with Turfgrip Adhesive Systems and Expert Tips.
Are you looking for an artificial grass adhesive to bond recycled artificial grass backings? Look no further, we've got you covered. We've been working with many of the major European manufacturers of artificial grass and have developed a number of adhesive systems for bonding all types of recycled artificial grass backings. Not only that, but we also have the UK's first fully recyclable artificial grass adhesive system, but more on that later.
In this guide, we will share our expert tips for bonding to difficult backings and share two adhesives from our range that are specifically designed for bonding recycled and polyolefin backed grasses. At Turfgrip, we've been driving artificial grass adhesive technology behind the scenes for quite some time, improving sustainability within the industry through our innovative recyclable artificial grass adhesive systems.
Why is a backing needed?
During the process of creating artificial turf, yarns are tufted into a tuft cloth. The artificial grass fibres are then secured in an underlayer, also known as backing. This backing serves two key purposes: ensuring the dimensional stability of the grass system and aiding in anchoring the synthetic grass fibres.
Why are recycled grass backings so difficult to bond?
The majority or recycled artificial grass backings are made from a number of of different variations of the Polyolefin chemical family. Although excellent for recyclability purposes, these materials are widely renowned as some of the most challenging to adhere to.
What type of adhesive is best for bonding recycled artificial grass?
As you might have already found out, conventional artificial grass adhesives just won't cut it. Whether it's a single component MS Polymer tube or a two-component Polyurethane system, the bond just isn't good enough. In most cases, the adhesive won't bond at all. In 2023, Turfgrip have worked alongside our manufacturing partners to develop two adhesives that can be used for all types of recycled artificial grass installations.

Achieve Superior Bonding in Any Weather with Our Expert Tips for Wet Conditions.
Looking for the ideal adhesive to bond artificial grass in wet weather? Look no further! Our knowledgeable experts have got you covered. They'll share their valuable insights and suggest the best adhesives tailored specifically for bonding synthetic turf in rainy conditions. As the company behind Europe's leading artificial grass brand, we have a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to wet weather bonding.
In this guide, we will give you five simple steps (and some more helpful tips and tricks) for bonding artificial grass and synthetic turf in wet conditions, along with recommending the best product for your needs.
Right then, let's get to it.
(Quick Overview):
Choose the right adhesive.
Remove as much excess water as possible.
Ensure your adhesive has been stored at the recommended temperature before use - usually around 10-20 degrees.
Apply pressure to the bond line or join straight away.
Continue to apply pressure to the bond line or join for the full duration of the cure time.
1. Choose the right adhesive.
This might sound simple, but it's an important one. Adhesives predominantly react with either moisture, oxygen or a combination of the two to start the curing process. We'll go through which adhesive type is best to use in the next section.
Don't get caught up in any false promises or clever 'Wet Fix' or 'Aquabond' names. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
2. Remove as much excess water as possible.
This might sound simple again, but it's a common mistake. Surface water is basically acting as a barrier between your adhesive and the artificial grass, so it's important we remove as much excess water as possible to reduce this impenetrable wall of H2O and make life easier for our adhesive. You may want to shake or brush the grass before bonding and dry the seaming tape (or other substrate) with a towel before applying your adhesive.
Never attempt to bond the adhesive in a full puddle of water!
3. Ensure your adhesive has been stored at the recommended temperature before use - usually around 10-20 degrees.
An adhesive from any reputable supplier should come with a data sheet that will state the 'Storage Temperature'. This will not only effect the shelf life of your adhesive, but also the curing speed and final bond strength too. We recommend keeping your adhesive inside the day before your project, as any form of quick heating will likely only warm up the packaging on the outside and not effect the actual adhesive temperature. It could also cause damage to your adhesive if heated too quickly.
4. Apply pressure to the bond line or join straight away.
For wet weather bonding, this is pretty much the best advice we could give. Remember how we mentioned that impenetrable water barrier on step 2? Well adding pressure is going to significantly help your adhesive to penetrate through that water barrier and hold firm to your artificial grass and seaming tape.
5. Continue to apply pressure to the bond line or join for the full duration of the cure time.
Our experts would always recommend that pressure is applied to the join or bond line for the full duration of the cure. If you haven't followed step 4 completely perfectly, or if your adhesive starts to come away from your grass or seaming tape during the curing process, the water will get straight into those gaps and start causing problems. You could use a few planks of wood, sand bags, or some spare rolls of grass - whatever you can find that will keep that pressure constant.
Which adhesive should I choose?
So we've covered our five top tips for rainy day bonding, but you're probably still wondering... 'which adhesive should I use for bonding artificial grass in wet weather?'
At Turfgrip, we pride ourselves on being the market leaders for wet weather bonding adhesives. Many of our unique formulations contain moisture absorbing chemicals which prevent H2O molecules from impacting the performance of the adhesive.

Prestige Lawns was founded by Kevin in 2012. When Siobhan his partner ran over the lawn mower lead and the grass grew to an unacceptable length, Kevin decided to install artificial grass into his own back garden.
Ten years on, Prestige Lawns now provide artificial grass installations for public and commercial projects across the UK, with a focus on providing the highest quality installations and using the finest materials and processes on the market.
Their goal is to ensure each project is unique and planned in accordance with the vision their customers have for their project.
The challenge
Since their journey started 10 years ago, Prestige Lawns have prided themselves on being at the forefront of design and installation processes, ensuring their customers are given a premium service.
Despite their success however, Prestige were struggling to imprint their exceptional brand position across their resale channels, missing a key component of the installation process; a high performance adhesive that offered a host of benefits and a point of difference.
As a result, they often found that customers would purchase their grass because of the premium brand and quality they offered, but purchase the same brand of adhesive that Prestige were offering elsewhere. Most often, this was down to being priced out of the market by cheap resellers looking to make a quick profit.
Not only did they miss out on a large amount of additional revenue, they also risked losing their customers to their competition, being tempted by cheap grass and even cheaper prices.
They needed a solution that would allow them to continue to be at the forefront of artificial grass installation quality, without cutting their profits to nothing, and ensuring their customers wouldn’t be tempted to resort to buying cheap knock-offs elsewhere, risking losing their artificial grass revenue too…
The Solution
Developing their own adhesive brand allowed Prestige Lawns to compliment their existing five-star artificial grass range with an adhesive that provided their customers with added benefits and a point of difference - a high performance, non hazardous adhesive that bonds to nearly all surfaces. Not only would they be switching out nasty chemicals found in most adhesives for hazardous free alternatives, they would be adding a further layer of quality to their existing process.
In addition, Prestige Lawns were able to provide their customers with a full artificial grass installation system that had their name on it. Designed, developed and sold exclusively by Prestige Lawns.
As part of the process, the team at Tigatech created four different design options that would compliment the Prestige Lawns brand, and after a lot of deliberation, the final artwork was created. The design process took less than a week and everyone was getting excited to see the real thing!
The result
Since developing their private label branded adhesive, Prestige have continued to stay at the very top of the artificial grass sector, providing customers in Milton Keynes and the UK with luxury artificial grass that cannot be rivalled elsewhere.
The addition of their private label brand has allowed Prestige to stay competitive with their trade customers, whilst also adding the extra level of quality to keep their customers coming back for more.
If you're an artificial grass reseller looking to increase your sales and profits or you're looking to start an artificial grass resale side of your business, there's plenty of reasons why you should seriously consider developing your own private label branded artificial grass adhesive and tapes.
If you’re trying to bond artificial grass to concrete and are unsure which artificial grass glue you should use, then look no further! Here’s two different adhesives you can use for bonding artificial turf to concrete. We’ll also cover some of the things to consider when choosing one that’s right for you.
